English Language Learners
Research shows that “the language of mathematics is highly specific and lacks the redundancy typically found to assist comprehension with other types of language.” (Chamot 1985; Chamot and O’Malley 1985; Secada 1983; Secada 1985) For dialog to become possible, the student must be equipped with a basic repertoire of linguistic concepts and structure.” (Morris 1975) Many features within Larson Learning® support the instruction of English language learners such as the glossary of terms and audio in English and Spanish.
To maximize the benefit to ELL students, it is recommended that:
Software be carefully monitored by a classroom teacher |
Teachers facilitate group activities and individual participation |
Students practice their own verbalization of the math concepts, both oral and written with features such as the Journal. |
